ADAS. Advance drivers assist systems are electronic systems on vehicles that are designed to help the driver operate the vehicle safely. The vehicle does more of the thinking.
These systems could be described as passive where the system will just warn or inform the driver of issues. Or they could be active where the system takes control of the vehicle including the steering or braking.
The sensors that help control these systems could be described as the eyes and ears of the vehicle. These sensors are attached to a processing unit that could be described as the brain.
When any of these sensors or the items they are attached to are replaced, worked on, or repaired they may need re-calibration, undertake minor adjustments to ensure they are measuring accurately.
When a windscreen is replaced on a vehicle the cameras or sensors attached to the windscreen require recalibration to ensure the vehicle is functioning safely.
Before any work is undertaken on the vehicle a diagnostic test is undertaken to identify any pre-existing faults contained within the ECU, Electronic control unit or brain of the vehicle. A report of any faults will be saved as a diagnostic report and is available as a PDF file, this is date and time stamped with the vehicle mileage and registration number. Any pre-existing fault codes contained within the ECU will be cleared from the system.
Once the new windscreen is installed a recalibration or minor adjustment of the cameras is required. There are two types of calibration. Static and dynamic.
Dynamic Calibration: This requires the vehicle be driven on the road. The technician operating the diagnostic or recalibration tool will operate from a passenger seat with a separate driver, either another technician or the owner / driver of the vehicle operating the vehicle. The software within the re-calibration tool will instruct the driver what is required. This type of calibration should be undertaken in good conditions, not raining, no fog, during the day, the sun must not be too low in the sky and on an urban road and not in congested traffic.
Static Calibration: This is undertaken in a workshop under controlled conditions. A flat surface is required with ambient lighting, light that comes from all directions away from windows. There should be no persons or weight placed in the vehicle. Tyres should be inflated to the correct pressure. It may require a full tank of fuel. A target board is placed in front of the vehicle and the cameras read the target to confirm calibration.
